Meet Lucy!

Lucy is a Whippet cross puppy that I got a few weeks ago. Unfortunately, from the beginning Lucy was not a healthy puppy. She went to the vet three times within the first four days I owned her, on the fourth day, she was found to be parvo positive. If you’re familiar with parvo, you know it’s a very serious and potentially fatal virus that affects dogs.

When I found out that she was parvo positive, I broke down, because at the time I didn’t know it was treatable. When the vet told me it was treatable, I regained myself, until she told me the treatment was, at a minimum, $3000 dollars. After hearing this, I of course thought my only option was to put Lucy to sleep. There was no way I had this kind of money, on top of her other vet bills. My friends responded to this by handing me their credit cards and saying, “We have a month to pay it off now”…. and I am forever grateful to them for this!!

The survival ratio for puppies with parvo is about 40%, but Lucy received excellent round-the-clock care. By the third day, her chance of surviving was up to about 90%. Lucy spent 7 days in the isolation room of a veterinary hospital hooked up to IV to keep her hydrated. And she made it! Lucy came home last Monday, has been eating, playing, and pooping like a normal puppy.

After everything was said and done, the cost for Lucy was almost $4000 with all of her other vet bills. I am currently trying to pay back my friends, and I am about $800 short. I want to pay off this debt so I can start to save for Lucy’s next shots and her spaying.
